Pick on the Boys © 2020 Dan McLaughlin All Rights Reserved Make Boys the ones who have to conform, Backwards from death till the day they’re born. Let Boys know the ever present constant fear, Of not being pretty; being slutty, or too queer. Hey! BOYS boys boys! They like to yell and hit, Pick on the boys! They didn’t mean to do it. Pick on the boys! They can’t even eat their soup, Pick on the boys! We work better in a group. Make Boys the ones who have to conform, Backwards from death till the day they’re born. Let Boys know the ever present constant fear, Of not being pretty; being slutty, or too queer. Pick on the boys! Pick on the boys! BOYS boys boys! Try to look so nice and smart, Pick on the boys! Funny to them is a fart. Pick on the boys! They make us girls cover up, Pick on the boys! They're the real butter cup. Make Boys the ones who have to conform, Backwards from death till the day they’re born. Let Boys know the ever present constant fear, Of not being pretty; being slutty, or too queer. Why is the girl the one tied to a post? Why is the girl unacknowledged like a ghost? Why must she never, no not once, be seen as proud? Her Sacrifice gets at best a muslin shroud. BOYS boys boys! They say we waste time with rouge, Oh, Pick on the boys! While they’re Boinking like a stooge. Pick on the boys! Do something better than they, Pick on the boys! She’s a smarty pants they’ll say. Make Boys the ones who have to conform, Backwards from death till the day they’re born. Let Boys know the ever present constant fear, Of not being pretty; being slutty, or too queer. Hey! Pick on the boys! Pick on the boys! Pick on the boys!

The One from Day Two © 2019 Dan McLaughlin All Rights Reserved You back behind the old boy’s gym, And you gave me your secret grin, I said “Hi”, You said “Hey.” It took me a bit, but you drew me in. From day two, You were the one, Two to one, You were my one. You were over there sneaking a smoke, Making some lame ass stupid joke. I said “Hi”, You said “Hey.” ‘Twas not the first sight when my heart awoke. From day two, You were the one, Two to one, You were my one. Oh you were the one from about day two, It takes a little while to get used to you. I saw after a bit that your love was true, So you were my one from about day two. You knew better than to take it slow, Couldn’t waste time with so far to go. I said “Hi”, You said “Hey.” And just like that you had my heart in tow. From day two, You were the one, Two to one, You were my one. You, there looking so polished and cute, In that light powder-blue prom suit. I said “Hi”, You said “Hey.” And what others thought I couldn’t give a hoot. From day two, You were the one, Two to one, You were my one. Oh you were the one from about day two, It takes a little while to get used to you. I saw after a bit that your love was true, So you were my one from about day two. Ooo about day two. Yeah…. Today will be our bright wedding day, And we will know just what to say. I’ll say “Hi”, You’ll say “Hey.” I’ll say “it took just a little while to get used to you” But you have been my number one from about day two” Yeah, oh you were the one from about day two, It takes a little while to get used to you. I saw after a bit that your love was true, So you were my one from about day two. You were my one from about day two. You were my one from about day two. Yeah, you are the one.

Hidden Arms 04:04
Hidden Arms © 20202 Dan McLaughlin All Rights Reserved. Forgiveness. Sweet forgiveness. Please teach me, I need to learn. Forgive me. Please tell me, how I can earn, Forgiveness? Sweet Forgiveness? My blind eyes don’t excuse, The things my hidden arms have built. They can’t unfurl a flag of truce, Or absolve me of my guilt. Forgiveness. Sweet forgiveness. Please teach me, I need to learn. Forgive me. Please tell me, how I can earn, Forgiveness? Sweet Forgiveness? We thought we each were living, A blameless, commonplace life. Only taking, never giving, We delivered only strife. Now using hidden arms I will never, again be My eyes forever watching, My heart open with apology. Forgiveness. Sweet forgiveness. Please teach me, I need to learn. Forgive me. Please tell me, how I can earn, Forgiveness? Sweet Forgiveness. Sweet Forgiveness. Sweet Forgiveness.

Boy in My Life © 2020 Dan McLaughlin All rights reserved. There’s this boy in my life, That makes me feel so glad. There’s this boy in my life, And he reminds me of Dad. The way he grunts when I pass him a tool, He says something dumb and thinks it’s a rule. The way he curses when he hits his thumb, But never looks at me and calls me dumb. There’s this boy in my life, That makes me feel glad. There’s this boy in my life, And he reminds me of Dad. The way that he just goes and does his work, The way he smiles when he’s around a jerk. The way he takes joy in driving a stick, Thinks my politics are too Bolshevik. Oh dear Lord don’t let it be, If he’s Dad, I’m his Mommy! And If he wants to marry me, Good thing I’ve had lots of therapy! There’s this boy in my life, That makes me feel glad. There’s this boy in my life, And he reminds me of Dad. The way he talks to guys in hardware stores, He makes sure he tracks no mud on my floors. The way he lets me takes food off his plate, Each time he sees me he says I look great Wooh ooh There’s this boy in my life, That makes me feel glad. There’s this boy in my life, And he reminds me of Dad

Made Up Love 06:10
Made Up Love © 2020 Dan McLaughlin All Rights Reserved. I knew it would take a spell; when I first saw you standing over there, I knew it would take a spell: your sturdy thighs, twinkling eyes, golden hair. I knew it would take a spell: I had a stumpy nose and a dumpy chin, I knew it would take a spell: Oh I had nothing special to bring you in. Made up love from magic cast, Made up love will always last. Made up love from magic made, Made up love will never fade. To cast the spell, I looked at you passively from afar. To cast the spell, observing you just as if you were a star. To cast the spell, study intense on what you liked to do, To cast the spell, crafting my spell uniquely just to you. I prepared the spell, I pictured perfect me for perfect you, I prepared the spell, I made something that had part of me too. I prepared the spell, I built a longing that you just couldn't see, I prepared the spell, that would bind us forever, you to me. Made up love from magic cast, Made up love will always last. Made up love from magic made, Made up love will never fade. I cast the spell, I made it so fine. I cast the spell, and you became mine. The spell was cast, basked in false love’s glow, The spell was cast, laid in sham love’s show. Made up love from magic cast, Made up love will it last? Made up love from magic made, Made up love will it fade? The spell was cast, under its thrall you never did vary, The spell was cast, your devotion too heavy to carry. The spell was cast, you loved me only the way that I was, The spell was cast, so that put us on an endless pause. The spell is now broken, for over time I grew and I changed, The spell is now broken, while the magic spells could not rearrange, The spell is now broken, ties of magic they could not adapt, The spell is now broken, and the links that bound us together snapped. I saw, I wanted. I wanted, I cast. I cast, I froze. Frozen, I broke. Broken, I hurt. I hurt, more than me. More than me, are hurt. I saw, I wanted. I wanted, I cast. I cast, I cast. I hurt, I hurt him. I cast, I hurt. The spell is now broken, he still has his sturdy thighs and golden hair. The spell is now broken, and now he asks me why I no longer care. The spell is now broken, I still have my cute nose and my saucy chin. The spell is now broken, next time I’ll know better how to begin. Made up love from magic cast, Made up love will never last. Made up love from magic made, Made up love will always fade. It will always fade.

Broken Wand 05:29
Broken Wand © 2020 Dan McLaughlin All Rights Reserved. I thought that I would do better, The day I set you free. I had my eye on someone else, When I cast you away from me. We had worked so long and so hard, To make our love so true. I assumed it would be easy, To love again with someone new. A broken wand won’t mend my shattered heart. A broken wand is not the place to start, A broken wand won’t weave a love that’s true. A broken wand won’t bring me back to you. At first just guy that I knew, I flirted guiltlessly. Then it went on and on some more, I thought he saw the real me. While we were having to work hard, Our time together blue. He was my relief from our life, Then, as a couple we were through. A broken wand won’t mend my shattered heart. A broken wand is not the place to start, A broken wand won’t weave a love that’s true. A broken wand won’t bring me back to you. He promised me his love was true, Forever in his heart. But after I declared for him, That’s when it all fell apart. As a temptress I was tempting, as a girl friend I was not. He said I was now boring; not any kind of hot. I called him a damn bastard, I went on the attack, Fun words to say in the moment, not words to win him back. I know that you have someone new, You treat each other well. I cry at night; I try to sleep. You have broken off from my spell. A broken wand won’t mend my shattered heart. A broken wand is not the place to start, A broken wand won’t weave a love that’s true. A broken wand won’t bring me back to you. Back to you. Back to you. Back to you. Back to you.

Girl Power 03:50
Girl Power © 2020 Dan McLaughlin All Rights Reserved. Now here’s something you don’t often see, Power protest songs sung nicely. So enjoy the tune and bob you head, Bonus points if you hear what is said. Girl power girl power. Girl power girl power. I’m girl power. We’re girl power. Girl power, girl power. Girl power. I control all I will look, think, and read. I control all my own personal creed. I control all of what you see of me. I control all of my female body. Girl power girl power. Girl power girl power. I’m girl power. We’re girl power. Girl power, girl power. There buck naked or tied up in a bow, I control all under the mistletoe. Whether at home or where I have to work, I demand at least you be not a jerk. Girl power girl power. Girl power girl power. I’m girl power. We’re girl power. Girl power, girl power. Look power. Friend power. Belief power. Sex power. Have you got it yet? Girl power girl power. Girl power girl power. I’m girl power. We’re girl power. Girl power, girl power. Girl power.

You Look Great, Really © 2020 Dan McLaughlin All Rights Reserved. Mom There is my only daughter standing up there, She’s next to her father, the bridal pair. These are the words that she wants me to say, On this my ex-husband’s second wedding day. Daughter My mom is sitting there towards the back, With her long time boy friend Jack. We all invited Mother plus one, To show any hard feelings were done. I know the only words that she will here say, No matter how long or short she’ll stay. Everything is lovely, in truth The bride is glowing, honest. Who did her make-up? It’s stunning, in truth. Everything is fine, honest. You look great, really. Mom That’s her father she’s proudly standing next to. Since we divorced, she has flowered and he grew. Carol and he make such a genuine match, It seems so natural now that their love would catch. Daughter I asked them only once to stay together for me, Dad said nothing; Mom was the one who said it couldn’t be. She told me then and later that while we all were smart, We all should be in homes where we lived with open hearts. She always insisted my Father was a man fine, And Mom, always the steady Mom, will stick to her lines. Everything is lovely, in truth. The bride is glowing, honest. Who did her make-up? It’s stunning, in truth. Everything is fine, honest. You look great, really. Mom Carol truly loves Tom, and my daughter too, And Carol thinks it fun when Sue calls her Mom 2. And Tom’s better with Carol’s love so today, I know just what to him and all I will say. Everything is lovely, in truth. The bride is glowing, honest. Who did her make-up? It’s stunning, in truth. Everything is fine, honest. You look great. Everything is fine, honest. You look great. Really. Really.

about

Cone of Magic was originally conceived of as a fictional band in the novel Maidens Rock by Margit Elland Schmitt and Dan McLaughlin. Things soon spiraled out of control and Dan was writing words and notes to the songs of a still fictional setlist. Nine songs later, Dan had the novel idea that it might be fun to have have someone actually sing the set. Margit (who already was a singer of some renown) agreed and between the two of them they voted Margit as the vocalist of choice. After Margit’s input, Dan took his collections of words and notes to the fine people at Supreme Tracks and asked that they be made into Taylor Swift like songs. Once Dan was in possession of fully realized instrumental tracks, Margit recruited her good friends Sandra Cadell and Laura Gregory to sing along with her. After amicably dividing the lead vocals among themselves, the ladies retired to Live Oak Studio in Berkeley, California in February and March of 2020, where under the skillful technical guidance of James ward, they created the album Maidens Rock.

Which, oddly enough, is the exact same name of the book that Margit and Dan have co-authored and is also available for purchase.

Coincidence? We think not.

The ladies of Cone of Magic are:

Margit Elland Schmitt: Margit Schmitt is a classically trained singer who likes tortilla chips, guacamole and long walks on the beach.  She has performed in choirs and in musical theater, at Carnegie Hall, and also in the car during road trips. She has subjected her own children to years of lullabies, before branching out to teach library skills to elementary students using musical comedy. This is her first attempt at writing while singing.

Sandra Cadell: Sandra has been fortunate enough to sing theatrically on stage, and has been know to sing for up to 4 -5 minutes before getting caught and thrown off.  She uses music and rhythm to teach academic concepts to her Middle School Special Day Class students.

Sandra performs Stand Up and Improv comedy....She tried performing comedy lying down, but kept falling asleep.  She also paints and has sold many of her creative watercolor paintings (mostly to those who got tired of her knocking on their doors and whining).

She has had the pleasure of working with Laura and Margit on stage (and has even let them speak from time to time).

She loves her dogs, her husband and her son (but won't say in what order).  She has been known to use her many musical and artistic talents in venues like Street Theater events, Renaissance/Fantasy/Pirate Faires, Dickens Christmas Faire and for DMCs in the Bay Area.

She will cook for you too.....as long as you like garlic.

Laura Gregory: Laura Gregory has been singing for a long time. She also likes petting cats and painting mermaids, as well as petting mermaids and painting cats, (although the latter is more difficult and the cats get really annoyed with all that paint in their fur.) She has sung onstage in various folk bands and as a myriad of roles in the musical theatre. When not performing, Laura can be found teaching wee humans to dance and sing, trying to find the perfect taco, or folding laundry.
